Measuring Gold Purity with the Touchstone Test
The “touchstone test,” or “touch test,” is a traditional method used to determine the purity of gold. The process involves rubbing the gold object against a black touchstone, leaving a trace of gold on the stone. Then, various acids of known concentrations are applied tracely. The reaction of the acid with the trace of gold indicates the purity of the gold.
Evaluation of the carat of gold with the density test
The “density test” or “dip test” is a method used to determine the density or carat of gold. The machine used to perform this test is often called a "densitometer" or a "carat tester." This device measures the density of gold by comparing the weight of the gold object in air with its weight when submerged in water. Using the principles of fluid physics, the tester calculates the volume of the gold object and thus determines its density, which then allows its carat to be deduced.
